Sigur Rós
Iceland’s Sigur Rós have achieved cult status with their ethereal and symphonic music. The band first made waves stateside in the late 90’s with their unique and enveloping sound. With much of their music performed in Hopelandic, an intuitive invented language, their sound transcends place and time. Perhaps, it’s no surprise that they’ve built a dedicated fanbase all over the world, as listeners are invited to place their own meanings and feelings into the music.
Fans are particularly excited about their 2024-2025 tour, with the band performing with a series of symphony orchestras, making their engrossing sounds all the more rich. We were thrilled to create the poster for the band’s stop at Chicago’s Auditorium Theater where they were supported by New York City’s Wordless Orchestra.
Sigur Rós’ music is equal parts iconic and mysterious, so we wanted the poster to reflect this duality. Built from a series of photographs, woodcuts, sketches, and hand-drawn typography, the poster presents a gauzy towering scene. The imagery aims to float in a similar realm as the band’s Hopelandic verse, relying on the viewer’s personal and intuitive connection to the graphic gestalt rather than resolute representation. Themes of arcane transmission are at the heart of the work, but the precise meaning is up to each viewer.
