Ina Weise is a textile designer based in Dresden, Germany. She’s been in Chicago for the past year interning with our buddies over at The Post Family, where she’s been helping them letterpress, screen print, and set up exhibits. As a matter of fact, we got to know Ina while setting up Vorab Fabrik earlier in the year. Between hanging our prints and installations, we got to see some of the wonderful work she’s been making during her time here. We felt a connection in her approach and attitude towards art, coming from an applied arts field and walking in the grey area between function and form. Thus leading to this collaboration. This print was created over the course of 4 evenings. Ina, Nadine, and I all came to the table with no real plan, just boxes of images, and textures. Ina chose to use this deep grey paper and that set the tone for how the piece would take shape. Starting with textured geometric forms, we built up structural components, that would act as the base for the print. Influenced by Ina’s textile design background, we took a sort of “all over” approach, combining, geometry, drawing, overprinting, and textural elements in a loose yet controlled manner. After 9 colors, we took step a back and decided to rein it all in a little. This is where the white frame came into play, which holds the entire image together. To avoid flattening everything completely, we added strips of texture and line work to two sides of the frame, activating similar components within the image. All in all, we printed 11 colors, and couldn’t be happier with the result.
