Following on the success of last years’ Bridgeport WPA pilot project presented at Version Festival in 2009, Emily Clayton has asked artists from around the country to create works that raise awareness of social and political issues of our day via the format of a poster.
Printervention underscores the necessity for the support of artists and the idea of civic responsibility to the greater society. Inspired by the Depression era’s Works Progress Administration (WPA) that hired artists to make murals, posters and other art for the everyday, Printerventionists are asked to recreate that era’s style of communication.
The project unfolds on the streets of Chicago, in storefront galleries and includes talks, workshops, public printing more. A mobile silk screen printing cart will be used to print and distribute works on the streets and in the parks of the City of Chicago. Printervention will debut on April 16, 2010 at the The Chicago Cultural Center’s Tourism Building. In addition, artists will be collaborating on works and conducting workshops on site during Version Festival 2010 taking place April 22, – May 2, 2010.
